How to get pregnant when suffering from PCOS – Times of India

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal condition that interferes with the reproductive system in women. Its general symptoms include irregular periods and obesity, which make it difficult for women to conceive. Data suggests that about 10 per cent of the women belonging to reproductive age in India suffer from this co81067105 ndition and often have to deal with infertility issues. We spoke to Dr Akhila Joshi, to know more about getting pregnant when dealing with PCOS and how to have a healthy pregnancy. Here are some common questions that she answered about pregnancy and PCOS.

Can you conceive when suffering from PCOS?

Irregular periods or missed period is quite common in women suffering from PCOS and PCOD, but this does not mean that they can never get pregnant. “Yes, it is possible to get pregnant when suffering from these hormonal conditions. It might be a little difficult but not impossible,” shares Dr Akhila. Ovulation problems and low egg quality are common, but by taking proper care of your health, any women suffering from these conditions can get pregnant.

Why do PCOS lead to infertility issues?
Infertility is basically caused due to two reasons: hormonal imbalance and the egg quality. Due to the hormonal imbalance, the quality of egg decreases, making it difficult to get pregnant. The second reason is the increase in the level of androgen hormone in the body. This is a male hormone and rise in its level in the female body may disturb many reproductive hormones.

How to manage pregnancy when suffering from PCOS?
These hormonal issues can be easily managed by making a few lifestyle tweaks. Dr Akhila suggests doing three things that can ensure a healthy pregnancy.

Eat healthy foods: Fill your plate with all kinds of healthy and nutritious foods. Providing sufficient minerals and vitamins can help to overcome the symptoms of these conditions.

Be physically active: Staying physically active is vital to improve your health and boost immunity. It also keeps chronic diseases at bay.

Enjoy your pregnancy: Do not take a lot of stress when you are pregnant. Do not stress or worry much about your pregnancy. The happier you are, the easier it will be to manage the condition.

Is it necessary to take medication when suffering from PCOS?
As per the expert, not every patient dealing with these hormonal conditions have to take medicines. Until and unless the case is very severe, regular intake of medicine is not required. “Most of the time PCOD and PCOS are caused due to poor lifestyle habits. Just making some healthy tweaks is enough to manage these conditions,” she added.

When to consult the doctor when trying to get pregnant?
Most women suffering from PCOS need to consult their doctor when trying to conceive. It becomes more crucial to take a doctor’s opinion when your period is irregular and you are planning a baby. Even in the case of women suffering from PCOD and PCOS for more than 10 years, it is recommended to consult an expert before conceiving.
