IND vs AUS 3rd T20I: Our batting in the middle overs cost us the game, says Virat Kohli | Cricket News – Times of India

Nine wins out of 10 T20Is in the year, a series win in Australia and New Zealand, and a win against Sri Lanka at home would be a record that Virat Kohli will be most proud of heading into 2021, a year that will see India hosting the T20 World Cup. No wonder the Indian skipper was a happy man, despite the only T20I loss of the year on Tuesday.
“We have played some really good cricket for the last 11 or 12 T20s. The fact is that we had a squad that had players without much international exposure. The standout is that the guys are not giving up. Someone is putting their hand up every time. We are a team that shows belief to try and win games,” Kohli said.

Middle-order concerns
However, problem areas remain. The catching and fielding are major areas of concern, but another key aspect is identifying the right personnel to bat in the middle order in the shortest format. Apart from Pandya, the performance of other middle-order batsmen were not up to the mark. Sanju Samson was preferred at No. 4 but he couldn’t quite capitalize on his starts. Manish Pandey batted at No.5 in the first T20I and scored just 2 before going out with a niggle. His replacement Shreyas Iyer came up with scores of 12 not out and a duck.
“I think in the middle overs while we were batting, was the phase that cost us the game. If we had one partnership of 25-30, that means Hardik comes in when we need less than 60, not 80 plus,” said Kohli, analysing his team’s defeat in the third T20. However, the skipper made it clear that he will back the players. “The communication has been simple. We are going to back individuals throughout. All we expect them to do is to commit to team goals.”
